Happy Equinox! Weird Weather Tomorrow?

Happy Equinox! Weird Weather Tomorrow?

It was a beautiful early spring day in the Gorge for Equinox Eve: mostly clear skies, comfortably cool temps, and a dry and breezy east wind. Despite all the sunshine, temps in The Dalles were about 3 degrees below normal when you factor in both morning low AND afternoon high. The airport touched 57 degrees after a low of 32, but most spots in the Gorge topped out in the mid-50s today. Even the notorious icebox called Trout Lake, was…

Urrrgh! Flood Weather In Mid-March

Urrrgh! Flood Weather In Mid-March

I was just looking forward to taking a break from weather blogging when THIS has to happen: That’s a landslide on West Burnside, a couple miles west of Downtown Portland. The airport has seen nearly 2” of rainfall in the past 48 hours, on top of a very wet February / early March. So the water-logged soil is prone to landslides. Also…the rising snow levels and rapidly melting snow in the Cascades, valleys in the Gorge, the High Desert, Blue…

March 3 MISSING Blog Entry: What Could Have Been This Season…

This is a posting of a blog entry from Facebook that never made it onto this site.  My apologies…because it’s a good tale of what is still theoretically possible in our climate in March. ======================= Yup, it’s time for one of those dramatic forecast titles.  For the past two or three days, model runs have been digging a cold and wet upper-level trough directly over us, beginning tomorrow Saturday and continuing through Tuesday morning.  This time it happens to be…

It’s FORK TIME!!! Winter Is Clearly Over

It’s FORK TIME!!! Winter Is Clearly Over

The night before last around 12:30am, I noticed one or two lone frogs croaking outside, for the first time this season.  It was still chilly and foggy at the time, more like an early winter day in Eugene than just about anything else I could think of.  Then suddenly between 4:53 and 5:29am, the temperature at DLS airport jumped from 44 to 54 degrees, as a west wind kicked in at the surface.  Yesterday was partly sunny, windy and very…

End of Winter Photos…Or Is It?

End of Winter Photos…Or Is It?

(more photos on the Facebook version of this post) It’s that time of year again.  Every year around the end of February / beginning of March I post all the signs of the coming spring in gardens and landscapes around The Dalles.  The past two late-winters were much warmer than this year, and thus the pre-vernal buds and flowers were much further along by this point.  In fact, we not only had daffodils in February 2015, but even a few…

Is Winter Over? Depends On Definition

Is Winter Over? Depends On Definition

The last two days have been a classic case of “Late Winter Slop” in the Pacific Northwest.  There has been a lot of snow in the Coast Range, Cascade foothills and High Cascades – and even low elevations have seen a tease of snow or sleet at times, especially in parts of NW Oregon and the Puget Sound.  This afternoon there was a wintry mix (rain, snow, sleet and graupel) at about 900 feet elevation on Sevenmile Hill, west of…

Exciting End to Winter Ahead?

Exciting End to Winter Ahead?

(This was posted on my Facebook notes 2 days ago.) We’re fast approaching that moment I truly dread – the moment when I have to decide that The Dalles is no longer under “continuous snow cover.” I’m not an official authority on the matter, but decided to appoint myself an unofficial role after reading in the paper that local officials committed a “Late December Flop.” Well not exactly…but they claimed the December snow cover continued unabated into January, something I…

EWWW! More Snow In The Gorge Today & Tomorrow

EWWW! More Snow In The Gorge Today & Tomorrow

After the weird “stationary snowstorm” for Portland last Sunday busted by staying further north, I thought that we were pretty much done with any real winter weather for the season. The maps showed nothing chilly again through at least the 16th or 17th of February, and any kind of cold/snowy weather after that time tends to be greatly impaired by the strong sun angle. But alas, in a winter like this it was not to end that easy…. There was…

Solar Spring” Has Begun (Despite More Wintry Precip…)

The season of solar spring began in the Northern Hemisphere at 7:27am PST, today Friday, February 3, 2017.  What is solar spring?  It is the quarter of the year, orbitally speaking, when the amount of incoming solar energy in a given hemisphere is increasing at the fastest rate.  Whew…was that a mouthful? We weather nerds like to think of Northern Hemisphere Winter as running from December 1 through February 28/29.  Traditional calendars, on the other hand, define winter as beginning…

A Bitter January So Far, And Ice Ahead!

A Bitter January So Far, And Ice Ahead!

As you may be well aware…it’s been a chilly January up until now!  In fact you could say it’s been quite historic:  the average temperature for the first 15 days of the month (both highs and lows), is 19.4 degrees F.  That is more than 16 degrees colder than average for the first half of January.  If the second half of the month were just as cold as the first half, then it would end up as the 3rd coldest…
